MoCA Filter
Is the performance of your Verizon FiOS home network lacking? Find out how a small filter can save the day
A MoCA filter is used to improve the performance of your home network.
This filter is often called a “Point of Entry Filter.” Meaning it is installed at the cable point of entry to your home, which is usually at the ONT. This little device will keep the MoCA signals from leaking out of your home’s cable network. The filter actually reflects the MoCA signals back in to your home’s coax. This is good because it will probably boost your signal strength resulting in a far better video and network performance.
Here is picture of typical MoCA filter on an ONT for FiOS, usually found mounted outside of a house.
A very typical problem for this type of an ONT (Tellabs 611) pictured above: The MOCA from the FiOS router or a Motorola NIM (Ethernet Over Coax MoCA Adapter) back-feeds into the ONT.
This ONT is supposed to have a triplexer that keeps the signals from interfering with each other. In order to fix the problem, the MoCA LAN signal (1125 MHz – 1175 MHz) needs to be filtered out of the coax network prior to reaching the ONT. The best way to do this, is place a low pass filter immediately after the ONT, which will pass through 5 MHz - 860 MHz video signal, but not allow the original MoCA router signal of 1125 MHz – 1175 MHz to reach the ONT.
Here is a picture of a MoCA POE Filter made by Eagle Comtronics.
MoCA is an acronym for Multimedia over Coax Basically, a home network technology that uses your existing coax or cable TV cable to carry network traffic. MoCA networking works great for carrying audio and video signals due to it’s flexibility, range and high speed – about 175 Mbps (send and receive.) MoCA networking is being used by cable TV providers like: Verizon FiOS, Comcast, Cox and satellite companies for Multiroom DVR features. Full MoCA info can be found here: MoCAlliance.org
